Report: Modesto-based KISS Cover Band Featured In Tribute-Band SHOWTIME Documentary
April 5, 2004Marijke Rowland of the Modesto Bee is reporting that the Modesto-based KISS tribute band LARGER THAN LIFE is featured in a new film exploring the subculture of cover bands that dress, act and play like their rock idols. "Tribute A Rockumentary" premieres at 9 p.m. Monday (April 5) on Showtime.
"A lot of people might think it is crazy to do this," said Modesto resident Val Popovic, who portrays KISS guitarist Ace Frehley, the Space Ace, right down to his smoking guitar. "But when you see the look on people's faces and how happy they are, it's worth it."
The band was one of five selected for the documentary. The others are tributes to QUEEN, JUDAS PRIEST and dueling MONKEES groups. Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh ("Traffic", "Erin Brockovich") serves as the film's executive producer.
The documentary's husband-and-wife directing/producing team, Rich Fox and Kris Curry, chose LARGER THAN LIFE out of a slew of KISS tribute bands because of its developing story. Filmed over the course of three to four years, the band is seen at its birth, near-breakup and boom.
